Lots of you have asked if we could open for a few hours after Father Christmas has been to the King's Head in Fundenhall - who are we to disappoint on Christmas Eve! We will be open from about 6:45pm and we've got a good range of children's drinks and snacks, so we hope that you can pop in for a quick tipple before you head home and hang up your stockings.

BOXING DAY:
We were originally thinking of opening on Thursday night, but most people quite understandably have family parties and commitments, so we have decided NOT TO OPEN this Thursday night.
More beer for Friday!

FRIDAY:
We'll be open as usual on FRIDAY from 8PM.
This weeks guest ale is the rather lovely Greene King IPA RESERVE (5.4% ABV): a perfect warming, full-bodied Christmas ale which delivers a beer of exceptional quality with dry bitter finish.

A touch of class for the Olde Git

This week is Jez's Birthday, so we thought we'd get in a special beer in his honour: Hardys & Hansons Olde Git

DAMN! It's 'Olde Trip' isn't it - don't tell him - he'll never notice!

Taking its name from the world famous Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, which lays claim to being England's oldest inn, OLDE TRIP (4.3% ABV) is a rich, toffee-flavoured beer bursting with fruity character that is perfectly balanced with a clean, bitter finish - just how the 'Olde Git' likes it.

See you on THURSDAY and FRIDAY from 8PM.

Wednesday, 4 December 2013

Which Fireside will you choose?

If it helps you to take your slippers off and pop down to WrenSocial this THURSDAY from 8PM, this week for our BEER NIGHT we've got a fantastic winter warmer from Greene King.

Fireside (4.5%ABV) is a mature, dark and malty ale, which is late hopped for a mellow linger.

On FRIDAY we've got our monthly FAMILY FUN NIGHT from 6.30 to 9.30pm
and this month we will be sharing the evening with
The Friends of Wreningham School
for their Family Christmas Disco

Children: £3.50 ticket (Adults FREE)

A Treat for our FIREWORKS event

One of the best events in the WrenSocial calendar takes place this SATURDAY at 7PM

The firework display is always fantastic for young and old and we'll have the BBQ going too.

Don't miss it!

NOTE: Because of the Fireworks event, we WON'T be opening early on Friday this month, instead we'll be open from 8PM on THURSDAY & FRIDAY nights this week and our guest ale is absolutely perfect:

GANGLY GHOUL (4.2%ABV)

Mystery Beer Week

This week we've got BEER! Truth is I don't know what - but there will be beer I promise.

The Safari Supper was such a success, that not only did we drink our way through a cask of Tribute and finish a cask of Lighthouse, but we severely dented a cask of Woodfordes Nelson's Revenge too, which is what is on my list for this week.

Anyway, come along from 8PM tonight (Thursday) or on Friday and something lovely and beer-flavoured will be ready for you to enjoy.

Wednesday, 16 October 2013

Give that man a Tribute

Okay then, visit us on Thursday or Friday from 8PM
hand-over £2.50 and we'll give you a Tribute!

Enough said.

Great British Beer

NOTE: WE'RE GOING TO OPEN AT 7PM ON FRIDAY THIS WEEK AND WILL HAVE THE ENGLAD WORLD CUP QUALIFIER ON THE BIG SCREEN!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Family Night CHILLI Special last Friday. It was great to see the place so full!

This week, with two important World Cup qualifying games coming up for the England football team, we thought that we'd better get behind the team - Anything for a good beer!

We enjoyed Greene King's LONDON GLORY (4% ABV) during the Olympics, so we thought that we'd order another cask of the great british ale. It's a celebratory ale created by the master brewers of Greene King for the nation's capital city. Centuries of expertise and craftsmanship have come together to produce this rich and fruity brew that combines crystal malt with challenger and goldings hops.

See you on THURSDAY FROM 8PM & FRIDAY from 7PM.

A FAMILY NIGHT - CHILLI SPECIAL

This FRIDAY is the first Friday of the month, so as usual we will be open from 6:30pm for our monthly FAMILY NIGHT + this month we're laying on a special treat: CHILLI.

Our wonderful chefs will be slaving away during the day to prepare some lovely chilli dishes for you and your family to enjoy. They'll vary from 'Very Mild' through to 'Hot!!!!' and hopefully a 'Vegetable Chilli' option too, so something to keep everyone happy and well-fed.

As well as being prepared by WrenSocial members, the dishes are also donated by them for everyone to enjoy. All we ask is that everyone eating contributes as generously as they can, so that we can continue to run these events and ask for the amazing support of our chefs.

We've also got a couple of nice beers to quench the palette:

HOPBACK REDSELL'S EKG (3.9% ABV)
The perfect partner for a chilli, we hope - This is a classic English bitter, a celebration of the best of our native malt and hops. Expect a burnished copper colour, strong malty flavour with a clean lemon and spice finish.

and HOOK NORTON 'Lion' (4% ABV)
A moreish, well-balanced bronze beer from the Cotswold's with a real attitude!

Of course if you can't wait until Friday, we'll also be open from 8PM on THURSDAY for our weekly BEER NIGHT, which is always a great laugh.

Wednesday, 25 September 2013

A roaring good beer

Another new beer to try this week and it looks like another good one:

HOOK NORTON 'Lion': pride of the Cotswolds.
is described as a wonderful bronze beer which has been created with today’s cask ale drinker in mind. Moreish, well-balanced and medium strength at 4%ABV this new brand is a beer with attitude!

Roger Protz, leading beer writer said:
A perfectly balanced bronze beer, full of fruit flavours and aromas. Complex yet refreshing, Lion has a long, bittersweet finish

But don't take their word for it - come and have a taste for yourself!

We're open as usual on THURSDAY & FRIDAY nights from 8PM.

Family Games Night

It's gonna be fun and games all the way this week:

and don't forget our weekly BEER NIGHT on Thursday from 8pm.

... and we've got one of my personal favourite guest ales this week:

KNOT JUST ANOTHER IPA  (5.0% ABV)

Brewed locally at Jo C's brewery in the heart of rural Norfolk, Knot Just Another IPA certainly lives up to its name! It's a golden hoppy bitter, with a good blast of British Bodicea hops, grown in the fields surrounding the brewery.

Where the name came from:
The Knot bird (latin name Calidris Canuta) can be found in muddy estuaries around the coast after they return from their Arctic breeding grounds. These stocky, short legged wading birds often form large wheeling flocks that can accumulate to more than 100,000 birds.

Celebrating the Great British Hop

This week, as the nations hop farmers begin to harvest the wonderful crop, which will ultimately flavour our favourite tipple, we thought it only right to celebrate the Great British Hop.

Hops are the female flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of the hop plant. They are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer, to which they impart a bitter, tangy flavor.

Growing hops is a one of the hardest crop choices in farming. Hops require a high attention to detail throughout the year but most especially in the growing months as they need to be checked frequently.

The UK hop harvest usually starts in early September and depending on varieties grown and size of farm, it may continue into early October. FIND OUT MORE >

So to celebrate the British Hop, we're not taking any chances - we've got a beer from one of our favourite brewers:

The Salopian Brewery in Shropshire: HOP TWISTER (4.5%ABV)

The palate is fresh, piercing and focused, with soft malt overtones and pronounced citrus flavours. A strong focus of taut, lemony, grapefruit on the finish which is balanced by a dry bitterness.

We'll be open as usual on THURSDAY & FRIDAY night from 8pm, we hope that you can hop along! (sorry)

Say goodbye to the summer

This FRIDAY is our monthly FAMILY NIGHT and even if the Summer doesn't hang-on just a little bit longer, we've still got a great night planned.

The fun starts at 6:30PM and we'll be showing:

World Cup Qualifying Live: England v Moldova
Live from 7:30pm
This is the first of two vital qualifiers for next year's World Cup in Brazil. The big test in Ukraine lies ahead, but first on the agenda is tonight's game against Moldova at Wembley. The two sides met last September in Chisinau when England eased to a 5-0 win. Roy Hodgson will be hoping for more goals and another three points to stay in contention at the top of group H.

Apologies to those who came in last night to try the Golden Sheep, but that particular lamb did in fact lie down (and die) on broadway, or the Yorkshire Dales at least - Not even Mark was happy serving that!

So in true Blighty style, we've called-in the chaps from Shepherd Neame to save the day!

Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale is the biggest ale success story of the last decade. Originally brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, its characteristically Kentish, hoppy flavour and risque advertising campaign has made it a firm favourite with beer lovers.

See you tonight, for some jolly good ale - isn't it, isn't it though!

Good luck Jerry

On Friday our very own Jerry (who helps Mark with the cellar etc) gets on a plane to Scotland to climb 9800ft up and down the UK’s 3 highest peaks: Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowden in Wales - oh yes, and he's hoping to complete all three climbs in just 24 hours!

He is doing this with a group of 30 people to raise funds for Adrenal Cancer research, which is a rare form of cancer, which took the life of Victoria Cornish (right) earlier this year - Victoria was the best friend of someone who works with Jerry and he will be joining Victoria's husband, brother, sister, friends and family on the trek in her memory.

If you haven't already done so and can find a few pounds to support Jerry's charity, then you can donate via a JUST GIVING PAGEwhich has been set-up via the Star Throwers Cancer Charity, who Jerry also helps with their marketing. Thanks.

To send Jerry off we've got Golden Adder (ABV 3.9%) - It's a light golden hoppy beer, which has a really a refreshing finish (refreshment is what you need if you are about to climb 3 mountains!). Good luck Jerry.

We're open from 8PM this THURSDAY & FRIDAY.

Jerry says that he will be in on Thursday night for a couple of hours, so why not come down and wish him luck.

GOLDEN ADDER

This week we have got a rather lovely ale from Mauldons Brewery in Sudbury as our Guest Ale. It's called Golden Adder (ABV 3.9%) and it's a light golden hoppy beer, which has a really a refreshing finish.

We're open as usual on THURSDAY & FRIDAY nights from 8PM with all the usual beers, ciders, wines, spirits as well as loads of soft drinks and bar snacks. So why not wonder down and enjoy the evening summer sun on our patio with a nice drink or too.

WrenSocial Summer BBQ

This FRIDAY we've got our WrenSocial Summer BBQ and despite the recent superb weather,
anything could happen the minute that we strike the match and get cooking.

But whatever the weather does, we'll be here from 7pm on Friday
with some tasty BBQ grub and a fabulous summer pint:

BRAINS British Summer (ABV 4.1%)
A sunshine coloured ale, dry hopped with Styrian Goldings to create a thirst quenching
summer ale with a refreshing bite, dry hop aroma and is perfect for a summer BBQ.
(We work hard at this stuff you know!)

We hope to see you and why not bring the neighbours along too - it's better than having to do the BBQ yourself!

We will also be open as usual on THURSDAY night from 8pm for our BEER NITE.

Time for a RANT!

Now I know that I'm (a little) OCD at times but I've got a real 'detail' issue this week!

This weeks GUEST ALE has been brewed by those lovely people at Greene King in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles debut album 'Please Please me', which is great!

However they have called the ale 'REVOLVER', which unless I am mistaken, is the name of the Fab Four's 17th Album, which was released in 1966?!

So, as far as I am concerned, this weeks guest ale is called 'PLEASE, PLEASE ME' - Either way it's a lovely, rich amber ale bursting with fresh and tangy fruit flavours.

We're open as usual on THURSDAY & FRIDAY nights from 8PM and it would 'please, please me' if you could pop in for a drink or two - we'll even put some Beatles classics on if you're very lucky.

Proud to be British

As our South African friend can't join us this week, we thought that we would celebrate all things British!

Wadworth Red, White & Brew (4% ABV) has been brewed in celebration of all things British.

It's a powerfully hopped golden summer ale with a zesty hoppy nose. The initial fresh, cleansing palate develops into a strong powerful bitterness, a sorbet of beers and a real thirst quencher!

See you on Thursday from 8PM and on Friday from 6.30PM for our monthly FAMILY FUN NIGHT.

It's a week for Special Deliveries

No, not the Royal Baby (but well done on that too), but several of our locals have been nagging us to get this Cornish lovely behind the bar for a while - so we've had one sent over 'Special Delivery'!

Doom Bar Bitter is named after an infamous sandbank at the mouth of the Camel Estuary in North Cornwall. It's where the river Camel meets the Atlantic Ocean on Cornwall’s rugged north coast, a sand bank, centuries old, known as the Doom Bar protects and calms this beautiful estuary. Sailors respect the Doom Bar knowing it to be unforgiving if met with haste or arrogance.

They say that Doom Bar 'the beer' embodies many characteristics which make it worthy to carry the name of this natural wonder. It’s distinctive aroma and balanced flavour set it apart from other beers taking unsuspecting first time drinkers by surprise with its moreish appeal. Doom Bar has achieved international cult status, is one of the fastest growing beer brands in the UK and the best selling cask beer in the South West of England.

Tasting Notes from Stuart Howe -  Head Brewer
“The aroma of Doom Bar combines an accomplished balance of spicy resinous hop, inviting sweet malt and delicate roasted notes. The mouth feel is a perfectly balanced and complex blend of succulent dried fruit, lightly roasted malty notes and a subtle yet assertive bitterness. The bitterness remains into the finish with dry fruity notes which implore the drinker to go back for more.”

Awards:

Regional winner of the Morning Advertiser ‘Great British Pub Supplier Award’, 2009 and 2010
International Beer Challenge World Top 50 Beer 2006
Bronze medal winner, Publican Licensees Choice Awards, 2010
Bronze in the International Beer Challenge, 2011
Bronze in the International Beer Challenge, 2012

Get along on Thursday or Friday from 8pm and enjoy the taste of Cornwall whilst the sun lasts!
You can even toast the future King if you really want to.

Golfer, Darren Clarke knows a thing or two

As the 142nd Open Championship gets under way at Muirfield on Thursday and the game's best golfers tough it out to lift the famous Claret Jug, former Open Champion Darren Clarke knows that whether it's on the fairway or in the bar - Practice makes Perfect!

Good advice indeed because this weeks Guest Ale is Belhaven St. Andrews Ale (4.9%)
See, you think we just order any beer - this stuff takes planning!

A real classic, Belhaven's St. Andrews Ale is inspired by another great Scottish invention - golf. It's simple really - a truly great beer, great balance and great flavours. Just the thing to quench the thirst after a day on the course.

We're open as usual from 8PM on Thursday & Friday.

Good luck to Darren Clarke over the next few days.

A bird brewing beer!

So how do you follow a weekend which had a beer festival with six fabulous ales?

Simple - by serving and excellent #Norfolk ale brewed by a bird! (her words not mine)

Norfolk Kiwi 3.8% ABV

Tasting Notes:
Norfolk Kiwi, is an easy drinking bitter and is brewed using the finest locally grown Maris Otter and wheat giving it a golden straw colour.

It is blended with generous helpings of English and New Zealand hops, giving it that unique Kiwi flavour and aroma. Contains barley and wheat (Gluten).

Whats in a name?
Norfolk Kiwi' is named after brewer Jo's husband Chris, who is from New Zealand. He can be spotted undoubtedly as a Kiwi by his usual attire of green swanndry and gumboots, often accompanied by a ute full of wood. If communication occurs don't be confused by the pronunciation of his 'e's as 'I's!

Having lived in the UK for more than 20 years, with the best part of that being in North Norfolk he has had an ambition list of things he would like to do in order to become a true English gent! Seeing a British winner at Wimbledon, see an Englishman score an unbeaten 100 at lords, see the French beaten at Twickenham, and the such like.

We're open on Thursday and Friday night from 8pm. Hope to see you, trust me - this ale is not one that you want to miss!

Also we've put a few pictures from the Beer Festival on our BeerFest13 page.

The real reason we drink beer

And this week we will be drinking Wells EAGLE IPA (3.9%ABV).

Water is the most important ingredient in beer - and Wells Eagle has an enviable advantage over other beers because it is brewed with pure, natural mineral water from the brewery's very own well.

In addition to this, Wells Eagle uses 100% farm assured barley and has received the coveted 'Red Tractor' mark of accreditation.

Wells Eagle is a copper coloured beer with a citrus, sweet and grassy nose. It's has a dryish bitterness on the palate and is light, crisp and sharp. (apparently).
We look forward to to some INTERESTING company this THURSDAY & FRIDAY night from 8pm.

Tuesday, 18 June 2013

Come and enjoy a beer from Britain's oldest brewer

This weeks GUEST ALE is Shepherd Neame's Master Brew (3.7%), which is brewed using only the finest Kentish barley and hops and is Shepherd Neame's flagship beer in the brewery's Kentish heartland.

The "Local Hero" is a distinctive, mid-brown bitter ale, with all the hoppy aroma you would expect of a beer brewed in the heart of the hop country. Hand-crafted by the Faversham brewery's talented team of experienced brewers, it is a well-balanced traditional ale, with a taste that's been described as "wonderfully aggressive, tinged with sweetness".

Find out more about this lovely session beer:

We hope to see you from 8PM this THURSDAY or FRIDAY.

Whoever is behind the bar, you're guaranteed of a very warm welcome and a fabulous drop of beer, as our GUEST ALE this week is the rather lovely Greene King IPA RESERVE - and there's plenty of "White Wine for the Ladies..."

See you there.

Don't miss 2 GREAT BEERS this week

No marketing required this week - just 2 lovely beers for you to enjoy!

RoyalAlbert

ST AUSTELL ROYAL ALBERT 4.4% abv

Named after Brunel’s bridge across the Tamar that links Cornwall and Devon and completes a major refurbishment in 2013. Royal Albert is a confident full malty ale, full of roasted toffee and caramel with a hint of vanilla. This is a very traditional quality ale that befits its name. Style: Traditional English bitter.

HARDYS & HANSONS BITTER 3.9% abv

Hardys & Hansons Bitter is a brew with an excellent balance of sweetness and bitterness that combines with a subtle hop character. Available in cask only, this is a distinctive beer with a full and satisfying finish.

See you on THURSDAY & FRIDAY nights from 8pm

Thursday, 23 May 2013

We've got something GOLD this week

No boys - not Shirley Eaton, which is a great shame!

In addition to our regular ADNAMS Lighthouse ale, this week we've got Greene King's rather lovely IPA GOLD.

This light golden ale (4.1%) brings the best out of the Savinsjki Goldings hop variety. The timing for introducing these hops is all-important because this creates the balance between the hoppy aroma and the bitterness of the aftertaste. The brewers add the hops at a later stage of the boil than with the Greene King IPA – this brings out tropical fruit aromas and spicy notes, which are followed by the clean, bitter flavour and crisp, dry finish.

Being a lighter ale, they recommend enjoying Greene King IPA Gold with fish or pasta - but we prefer Pork Scratchings, Peanuts and Crisps - or perhaps a wedge of Cheese if you're really lucky!

We're open as usual from 8PM this THURSDAY and FRIDAY.

Thursday, 16 May 2013

Centennial hops, and has a citrus taste and subtle fruit aroma.
A good partner for our 100% beef, beef burgers.

ADDED FOR THE BBQ: OLD GOLDEN HEN (4.1% ABV)
