It's on the web - so it must be true!

According to website cure-hangovers.com apparently...

The words beer and health usually do not go together... Wine has always been the show stealer for its numerous health benefits, but it now appears that moderate consumption of beer may also have some positive benefits on health. Studies show that sensible beer drinking (i.e. no more than two bottles for men (WrenSocial comment: except on Thursdays!) and one bottle for women per day) can be beneficial to the heart and lower the likelihood of some diseases.

Regularly consuming alcohol in small amounts lowers some of the risks that come with aging. Consuming a beer a day increases high-density lipoprotein (also known as HDL), which is a good form of cholesterol needed in the body. Drinking beer in moderation can also aid in protecting against type 2 diabetes. Scientists believe diabetes prevention via moderate alcohol consumption comes from higher insulin sensitivity.

The moderate intake of alcohol has been shown to line blood vessels, lowering the chance of a blood clot or plugged artery. The likelihood of a heart attack is 30-35% lower for men who consume modest amounts of alcohol. One to two beers a day may protect men from a heart disease related death, as found in a recent study showing 20% fewer deaths in a group of men who moderately drank each day versus a group of males that did not drink. Hypertensive males that drink occasionally are also at less risk of heart attack.

So clearly your health is in serious risk if you don't come out for a couple of pints tonight! This weeks ales are:

See you later.

WrenSocial launches new whisky

We think we've spotted a gap in the market for a high-profit whisky, which can be targeted at rich old farmers!

Initial trials went very well last night and we are considering making it available as a standard offering in our Witch & Wren Bar!

Come and have a pint, whilst you can still afford it!

Well it was the budget this week and Uncle George announced that the price of a pint is set to increase due to rises in Government alcohol duty rates.

The Treasury said rates will increase by 2% above RPI inflation, so prices will rise by 5% from next week.

CAMRA said the announcement will lead to the price of a pint increasing by between 5p and 10p in pubs and means that beer duty has increased by more than 40% since 2008.

Chief executive Mike Benner said: "The fact Britons are forced to pay over 40% of the EU beer tax bill but consume only 13% of the beer sold in Europe is remarkableBritish beer in a pub is so heavily hit with duty and VAT, the taxman's whirlwind hikes translate to him guzzling a third of every pint served, a shadow cast over the beer drinker depriving people of an affordable night down their local."

Luckily we bought our current beers before this price rise, so for this week at least, our ales remain just £2.50/pint for social club members (on Thursday & Friday nights).

Tonight and tomorrow from 8pm, we've got:
Adnams Lighthouse & Elgoods Spring Challenge.

Drink up quick like Uncle Dave!!!

Beer: The greatest invention of mankind?

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."
Dave Barry

Tonight we will conduct some serious research into this claim with these 2 excellent ales:

Skinners Best Bitter
ABV 3.6%
Skinner's New Year Golden Ale. Beautifully hoppy session ale with hints of citrus and bitter sweet malts.

Adnams Lighthouse
The recipe for Adnams Lighthouse is based on an award-winning beer that we used to call ‘Champion Pale Ale’. Lighthouse is a 3.4% abv beer, amber-coloured with a light fragrance, lovely malt flavours and long hoppy after-palate.

It's International Women's Day @WrenSocial tonight

Yes it's International Women's Day - so as my wife would say:

"For heavens sake - if I've told you once I've told you a thousand times, will you get off your fat a*^e, turn off that bl@*dy football and get down to the Social Club... you have friends that haven't seen you all week and want to hear all about the fact that your arms are sore, that your silly football team won at the weekend & that you've found a new satellite channel that only seems to be on for 10 minutes from midnight!"

pauses for breath

...and another thing, it's about time that you got your wallet out of your pocket and bought a round. Plus you still need to pay your club membership (you know who you are). Go, just go will you - you're in my way here and you're giving me a headache now - so just get down to the Social Club from 8pm tonight!

See "It's what women want!"

ps. Can you still come out in the car and pick me up my darling, so I don't have to walk home. Luv u!!!
